Learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.)

Ofsted 2020 'Children get off to a secure start in early years.'

Every child deserves the best start in life to enable them to fulfil their potential. We recognise that every child is unique and that all children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. Windmill Nursery provides an exciting curriculum that follows your child's interests and needs in the E.Y.F.S ' 7 Areas of Learning'

The 4 prime areas (for inspiring curiosity, enthusiasm for learning and forming relationships) are communication and language; physical development; and personal, social and emotional development. The 3 specific areas (through which the prime areas are strengthened and applied) are literacy; mathematics; understanding of the world and expressive arts and design.

Ofsted 2020 'Pupils get off to a great start in early years because phonics is taught consistently and effectively by well trained staff.'

Our carefully planned curriculum is enriched with local visits to the library, farm, windmill and church; visitors from the community and cooking in our Nursery kitchen. The Nursery children regularly join older School children to explore our fantastic ‘Gruffland’ nature area, share stories, celebrate festivals and take part in exciting investigation weeks. Windmill Nursery is very much part of Mill Lane School and the local community.

The E.Y.F.S. also focuses on the Characteristics of Effective Learning (playing and exploring; active learning; and creating and thinking critically). These characteristics underpin learning and development across all areas and support a child to be an effective and motivated learner.

Observations and Assessment In Nursery, children are observed during play and in adult-led activities. These ongoing observations and assessments help us to understand each child’s needs and interests and carefully plan activities to support their next steps. Development and progress is assessed and recorded using the ‘Early Years Outcomes’ in a Learning Journey booklet. Observations and any WOW moments from parents and carers are a very welcome contribution.

Your Child’s Progress and Development We strongly value the partnership with our parents and carers. Please see us if you would like to discuss your child’s progress or have any concerns. We offer parent consultations (with evening appointments), twice a year and on transition to Reception, we provide a summary report of each child's development at Nursery.
